Kentucky Inmate Records Systems
Kentucky county jails and the Kentucky Department of Corrections do not share one public roster. A jail's elected jailer, sheriff, or local corrections authority maintains bookings for its facility. The Department of Corrections manages state offenders, institutions, contracted placements, and supervision. A sentenced person may remain in a county jail during classification or transfer, so location can shift between systems.
Federal prisoners require the Federal Bureau of Prisons Inmate Locator. BOP can be searched by name and demographic fields or by a federal register number. It does not cover Kentucky DOC custody. A federal pretrial detainee held under a U.S. Marshals contract may also require confirmation with the county facility or federal authorities.
The official BOP locator illustrates the separate federal search path.
A federal result should never be treated as a Kentucky DOC or county jail profile.
Kentucky Online Offender Lookup
Kentucky Online Offender Lookup, or KOOL, is the Department of Corrections search for Kentucky offenders and supervision records. Search tools include name, alias, photo, DOC number, PID number, status, location, supervision county, age, race, gender, offense, KRS code, conviction county, and custody or release date ranges. A DOC number provides the strongest match. For a name search, begin with the last name and little other data, then use profile fields to separate matches.
KOOL can display a prison location, contracted placement, county of supervision, parole or other community status. It is not limited to people physically inside a state prison. The offense list reflects convictions entered in the corrections record, not every arrest. Sentence and release data are administrative summaries; the signed court judgment remains the source for the imposed sentence.
- Open KOOL and search the DOC or PID number when known. Otherwise enter a surname and minimal first-name data.
- Use aliases when spelling or a former name may differ. Avoid “photos only” because it can exclude a valid profile.
- Compare age, race, gender, conviction county, offense, and identifiers before selecting a person.
- Open the profile and read current status, location, each conviction, sentence, and all projected dates in context.
| Field | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| DOC / PID Number | Corrections identifiers used to distinguish people with similar names. |
| Current Location | Institution, placement, or county of supervision as entered by DOC. |
| Offense of Record | Conviction name, KRS, class, county, dates, and indictment reference where populated. |
| Sentence Length | Term data and concurrent or consecutive structure as recorded. |
| Projected Release Date | An administrative estimate that can change with credits, detainers, discipline, parole, or correction. |
| Supervision Status | Custody, parole, community supervision, absconded, or other displayed status. |
County jail vs. state prison: A KOOL no-result can mean the person is in local pretrial custody. Search the county directory, then check BOP or release status if neither system matches.
DOC's KOOL information page states that data updates daily and includes an important finalization warning.
Information newer than 120 days may not be finalized, so recent sentence and transfer data needs direct confirmation.
KOOL dates have distinct meanings. Admission, institution start, supervision begin, parole eligibility, projected release, and maximum expiration are not interchangeable. Parole eligibility is not a promise of release. Projected dates can move because of sentence credits, detainers, disciplinary action, parole decisions, new judgments, or calculation corrections. Check the displayed status and location, then call the listed official facility when timing matters.
Kentucky County Jail Rosters
There is no single judiciary-operated roster for all 120 county jails. Official county sites may link a booking vendor, jailtracker-style interface, sheriff app, PDF, or only a jail phone number. Vendor branding does not make a roster unofficial when the county government or jail links it, but vendor coverage is still local. Validate the path through the official county office before entering personal data or sending funds.
County jails hold people awaiting first appearance or trial, detainees who have not posted bond, local-sentence prisoners, people awaiting DOC transfer, and some people held for another county or sovereign. A person can disappear from a current roster because of release, transfer, hospital movement, court transport, data policy, or error. Disappearance does not prove dismissal or freedom.
Find an Inmate in Kentucky
Choose the first search from the custody stage. A recent arrest points to the arrest county's jail. A sentenced state offender points to KOOL. A person can remain locally housed after sentencing, so search both when transfer is likely. Confirm the exact location before visiting, sending mail, or making a deposit.
- For a recent arrest, select the event county in the county directory and follow its official jail link.
- For a state sentence or supervision, search KOOL by DOC number or minimal name data.
- Compare identifiers, dates, agency, charge or conviction, and location. Do not rely on name alone.
- If neither matches, search Kentucky VINE and BOP, then call the likely official facility.
- Confirm the live location, identifier, visitation, mail, and funds rules before taking action.
Kentucky Jail Search Fields
Public jail interfaces vary by county and vendor. Search with few fields first because spelling, initials, aliases, and delayed entries can hide a match. Booking number is the strongest key once known.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Last Name | Text | Usually | Start with exact surname; partial and wildcard support varies. |
| First Name | Text | No | Use to narrow common surnames, but try variants if no result appears. |
| Booking Number | Text | No | Often an exact local identifier and the best match key. |
| Booking Date | Date | No | Can narrow recent intake or historical lists where offered. |
| Status | Choice | No | Current, released, or another vendor-defined category. |
What Kentucky Jail Profiles Show
A booking profile is a custody record, not a conviction history. Initial charges can lag later prosecutor amendments. Bond is not a fine, and posting bond is not a disposition. Holds from another county or agency may prevent release after the displayed local bond is met.
| Field | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| Booking Number | Local intake identifier used for calls, mail, records requests, and some deposits. |
| Booking Date | Jail intake date and time, not necessarily the offense or court filing date. |
| Charges | Initial allegation, code, case, and agency where displayed; verify amendments with the clerk. |
| Bond Amount | Type or amount per charge, plus possible holds; current court confirmation controls. |
| Housing or Facility | Current local placement where public safety rules permit display. |
| Release Status | Release from that jail, which can include transfer rather than freedom. |
Kentucky County Jail Facilities
County custody is locally administered, so Kentucky has no one valid statewide jail address, phone number, or visitation calendar. A county may use a detention center, regional arrangement, or more than one housing location. The inmate's displayed facility and booking identifier should be confirmed before a trip. State facilities follow DOC policy plus institution-specific schedules.
Use the Kentucky county directory for the official local route. For state placements, use the Kentucky DOC facilities directory.
The official DOC facility directory identifies current state prison and community-services locations.
Facility listings should be checked against the offender's live KOOL status before travel or payment.
Kentucky Booking and Bond
Booking commonly includes identity checks, fingerprints, photograph, property inventory, search, charge and warrant entry, medical or safety screening, and housing classification. The roster may update before the first court appearance. Constitutional prompt-review duties apply after warrantless arrest, but the exact Kentucky schedule depends on arrest time, court availability, and the allegations. No fixed hour should be assumed from a roster.
Initial judicial processing addresses probable cause, counsel, and release. Cash, surety, unsecured, and personal-recognizance terms can appear. A judge may impose other conditions or detention where law permits. Bond amount is not punishment, a bondsman premium differs from money posted with the court, and several charges or outside holds can affect actual release.
Note: Verify a Kentucky jail charge against the filed court case because prosecutors can amend, dismiss, or decline the initial allegation.
Kentucky Inmate Visitation Rules
Visitation policies vary by jail and state institution. Confirm visitor approval, photo identification, age rules, dress code, prohibited items, visit type, booking or DOC number, scheduling deadline, and fees. The table shows how schedules are commonly organized, not actual hours. Use the county directory or DOC facility page for the current calendar.
| Day | Hours | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Weekdays | Facility schedule controls | Onsite, video, or both |
| Weekends | Facility schedule controls | Often housing-unit or surname based |
| Holidays | Confirm closures or changes | May differ from regular schedule |
| Professional visits | Arrange directly | Separate attorney or official process |
Contact Kentucky Inmates
Mail, phone, electronic messages, and video visits use facility-specific rules and approved vendors. Confirm the full legal name, booking or DOC number, exact mailing format, allowed paper and photographs, account limits, and prohibited items. A vendor appearing in search results is not enough. Follow the vendor link from the official jail or DOC page and retain each payment receipt.
Kentucky VINE offers custody-status search and notification across county jails, prisons, and specified mental-health or juvenile facilities. Users may enroll for release, transfer, escape, and parole-hearing notices by phone or email. VINE is not a court history and cannot guarantee advance warning.
VINE can supplement both local and state searches, but it does not merge the underlying files. Search by name or available offender or booking identifier, choose the notification event and method, and keep contact details current. A VINE transfer alert concerns custody movement, not dismissal or conviction. For a court date, use the clerk or official court-event search. For urgent personal safety planning, confirm directly with the responsible agency rather than waiting only for an automated notice.
The official Kentucky VINE interface supports search and notification enrollment.
Keep notification details current and confirm urgent safety information directly with the responsible agency.
Kentucky Inmate Funds and Records
County jail trust accounts and state offender accounts are separate. Confirm the person, system, location, identifier, approved vendor, deposit cap, payment method, and fee before sending money. Do not use an unofficial inmate-search page to make a deposit. A transfer may change the correct account route.
For an older booking that no longer appears, request the booking and release sheets from the jail or sheriff custodian, giving name, booking number, and date. For past state incarceration, ask DOC for releasable corrections records. For conviction proof, ask the Circuit Court Clerk. For parole records, use the responsible corrections or board channel. One request cannot be assumed to search every Kentucky custodian.
Note: A county jail release date may mean transfer to Kentucky DOC or another agency, not release to the community.
